Michelin tyres to be 100% sustainable by 2050
According to the French tyremaker, a
Michelin tyre is a high-tech
product comprising more than 200
ingredients. The main one is natural rubber,
but the many ingredients also include
synthetic rubber, metal, fibers and
components that strengthen a tyre’s
structure, like carbon black, silica and plasticizers,
resins, etc. Incorporated in perfect proportions,
these materials interact to deliver an
optimal balance of performance, driveability and safety,
while steadily reducing the
tyre’s environmental impact.
Signed in November 2020, the partnership
between Michelin and the Canada-based
Pyrowave can produce recycled styrene from
plastics found in packaging, like yogurt
pots and food trays, or in insulating panels.
Styrene is an important monomer used to
manufacture not only polystyrene but also
synthetic rubber for tyres and a wide variety
of consumer goods. Eventually, several tens of
thousands of tonnes of polystyrene waste
could be recycled back into its original products as
well as into Michelin tyres every year.

More
Lastly, Michelin announced in February 2021
that it will launch the construction
of its first tyre recycling plant in the world with Enviro.
This Swedish company has
developed a patented technology to
recover carbon black, pyrolysis oil, steel, gas and
other new, high-quality reusable materials from
end-of-life tyres. It will enable everything
in these tyres to be recovered and reused in
several types of rubber-based production processes.

Tyre dealer after huge mileage savings
Easityre has moved its fleet of wholesale
delivery vans onto a
Michelin Agilis CrossClimate policy having
found the tyres to last twice as long as rival
premium brand fitments.
Operating from two locations in Fife and Tayside,
the independent dealer distributes
tyres to the motor trade
throughout east and central Scotland.
The company traditionally ran its
Renault vans on a mix of
premium brand tyres. However,
it switched to a full Michelin
policy having been hugely impressed
with the performance and
longevity of the Agilis CrossClimate range.
Scott Meechan, Managing Director at Easityre says:
“We have a fleet of 26 vans that we use to
make deliveries to
our customers on a daily basis. Last year,
we started running the
Michelin Agilis CrossClimates and we
were blown away with the results.

Details to see
“Compared to other premium brands,
we’ve found the Michelins to last a
lot longer and the drivers noticed a big
improvement in terms of performance
on the road in all conditions.
“Our vans average around 40,000 miles
per year.
The Agilis CrossClimate – with its rugged
tread pattern – is built to
boost safety in all weathers whilst delivering
high mileage, impressive robustness,
damage resistance and long-lasting performance.
Inspired by the Michelin CrossClimate+ car tyre,
the V-shaped tread blocks’ bi-directional
self-locking sipes provide
cutting edges suitable for winter conditions,
whilst maintaining the long-lasting
performance of Michelin’s summer tyre range
on dry and wet roads.
“The longevity of the Michelins has really stood
out for us, as well as the
outstanding grip they provide,” adds Meechan.
“By switching all the vans over to
Agilis CrossClimates, we’re hoping to save money
as we’ll be fitting far fewer tyres.
Plus, running the tyres for longer means using
fewer raw materials, so it’s the right
thing to do from a sustainability perspective.”

Michelin puts a hold on supply of four-wheeler tyres in India, Why?
Cheap 275/45R21 Michelin Tyres
In June 2020, the Indian government imposed a
restriction on import of pneumatic
tyres in the country.
The Directorate General of Foreign Trade
(DGFT), in a notification,
placed tyres under restricted category,
which meant tyre importers would now have
to obtain a license or permission from
the DGFT. Earlier, the import of tyres in India
was unrestricted, leading to the flooding
of the market with tyres from countries like China.
This was adversely affecting the Indian tyre
manufacturers. Because of the inverted
duty structure, the local tyre companies
were paying higher taxes to locally
manufacture tyres in comparison to import
duty levied on tyres. For example, resistance, or the new MICHELIN X MULTITM ENERGYTM range that is
several crucial raw materials like
natural rubber attract a tax of up to 27 per cent
while the duty on import of tyres is around 6 to 8 per cent.

REASONS
This, according to India tyre companies,
didn’t create a level playing field,
thereby compelling the government to
impose restrictions on import of tyres.
This is aimed at helping Indian tyre
manufacturers. However, the restrictions
have started paving difficulties for some
foreign tyre manufacturers as almost
all tyre imports have now been stopped temporarily.
Michelin has apparently
stopped supplying four-wheeler tyres to its
dealer partners citing the restrictions.

According to the French tyre maker, the
licensing restrictions imposed by the
Indian government has made it difficult
for the company to import passenger car
tyres in the country. This has constrained
the supply, preventing the company to
supply four-wheeler tyres to its dealer
partners in the country until a further update
from the government.

Michelin, in a statement to dealers, said,
“As you may be aware, the recent
import restrictions on tyres in India has
impacted our passenger car business
by constraining supplies and restricting our sales.
Due to this uncontrollable
situation of license limiting our supplies,
we regret to inform you that we
